Brisbane APG sale was promoted as the “value sale” or what I now call the “BUYERS SALE”. What l find really interesting was the lack of interest in Mr Feelgood’s yearlings. One buyer’s view was that, six 2yo winners this season and a couple articles the week before the sale did little to change his view on a sire that promised so much. He went as far as saying that the horse needs a change and New Zealand should be his base in the up and coming breeding season. Big call in my view.
Now to put some balance back into the view of the mentioned buyer above, Mr Feelgood did have a colt, Lot 575A (Solid Earth) sell for $30,000 to Craig Whiteoak a Local Queenslander. Grant Dixon was happy to part with $25,000 each for lots 516 & 522 (Solid Earth ) . Grant was also the buyer of some other lots Solid Earth had consigned, paying $37,500 for Lot 543 a Mach Three Filly and $38,000 for Lot 520 a colt by Bettors Delight.
Art Major in my view was the standout sire of the day. Lot 556 (Trevor & Louise O’Reilly ) sold a beautiful looking Art Major colt to BBW & Sons for $26,000. Greg Mitchell & Burwood Stud consigned Lot 559 (an Art Major filly) that sold to Marc Hanover & Gordon Banks for $65,000. The 3rd and final Art Major Lot was 579 (Montana Park ) which was sold to Paul Galvin for $51,000.
Roll With Joe’s was also well received in this sale. He sold 3 of the 4 lots listed at an average price of just over $20,000 which l think is a reasonable result as his service fee for that year would have been sub $4,000 after discounts. Pet Rock only had one yearling in the sale and with that colt selling for $33,000 connections of Lot 562 should be happy. McArdle also proved he has plenty to offer for breeders who are looking for a value stallion that the buyers are happy to pay good money for, with Lot 537 selling for $25,000.
The Buyers (who we clearly need to do way more for ) that supported this sale had a real opportunity in my mind to pick up some really good prospects without braking the bank. With the $100,000 and the major $350,00 race on offer for these Brisbane yearlings, don’t be surprised if the clearance rate picks up over the course of the next week.
On what was clearly a challenging day for the vendors, l thought APG’s General Manager David Boydell summed things up perfectly in his sales summary below. It was refreshing that someone in his position would call it as it was, please see the clip below
