A report coming out of South Australia over the last couple of days is that Harness Racing South Australia (HRSA) chairman, Mark Carey has been replaced as the Country Clubs representative on the HRSA board of management, which will take effect as of the new season.

Its common knowledge, that harness racing in SA is on its knees and now we see a clear sign that the participants have had enough.

While it would be  totally unfair to land all of South Australia’s problems at Carey’s feet, what is clear however, he – along with the other board members were unable to implement  the urgent changes needed to save the sport, in once the powerhouse state of harness racing in Australia.

Gary Crocker a local owner and breeder who originally hails from Port Pirie, has been trusted with the responsibility to represent the country clubs and one couldn’t think of another appointment that holds such pressure, he is only one member one vote as part of a team that has to change the direction harness racing in SA is headed and the implementation of new strategy.

Change must happen very quickly in our view and in the view of all the participants that send Harnessbred.com correspondence almost on a daily bases

Until harness racing SA management and staff can get even the most simple basics right, like how to treat its participants and sponsors in a respectful manner, this positive appointment may not be enough.

Let’s hope this appointment is just the first of many more announcements of a change in people and policy for sake of all South Australian harness racing fans.

We all need to stand up, work hard and do our bit to save this sport.
