BB2 Lombo_mandingo

Underrated stallion,Lombo Mandingo, produced another winner at Terang on Thursday July 28, when roan mare,Looks Like Heaven, scored in the last race.

The win was special for reinsman Jason Lee, as it bought up his 100th winner of the season.

Looks Like Heaven has now won three times from just seven starts, since joining Marg Lee’s Terang stables. The four -year-old mare was bred by well-known breeder and owner ,Zac Cornell, and is out of Jet Laag mare,LibertybelleLombo.

Lombo Mandingo stands at Bob Fowlers,Allwood Stud, at Bullsbrook in West Australia for $1,100 (including GST). He was an outstanding juvenile on the racetrack. From his 29 starts asa 2 and 3 year-old,Lombo Mandingo won 14 races and $216,675 in prizemoney.

In any other year, Lombo Mandingo would have been his age group’s,“Horse of the Year”.

Unfortunately, for the son of Million To One, he wasn’t born in ‘any other year’. Hewas part of the crop that produced, arguably, the greatest juvenile Australia has seen – Lombo Pocket Watch.

As such,LomboMandigo was relegated to ‘bridesmaid’ in features such as the Bathurst Gold Crown, Vicbred Super Series Final and Linden Huntley Little Memorial. Instead, Lombo Pocket Watch grabbed the glory.

LomboMandigo also finished third in the Australian Pacing Gold, Breeders Crown and Victoria Derby, and fourth in the Kevin Seymour Nursery. All races were won by Lombo Pocket Watch!

But in the breeding barn “Mandingo”reigns supreme over his former rival on the racetrack.

A son of the Falcon Steelster stallion, Million Too One, Lombo Mandingo has an amazing record given the small book of mares he has served since going to stud in 2008.He has produced just over 50 percent runners to foals and 56 percent winners to runners – a statistic that any stallion would be proud of. He is also a good sire of fillies.

Maddy White is a $100k earn for Mandingo: interestingly she is out of the same material line as her sire.Another daughter,Classic Crest, won the Group 3 SA BOTRA Golden Nursery in 2011, andMizLulabellLombo,a 1.56 performer out of a Village Jasper mare,  won the Queensland Rising Stars and heats of the Breeders Crown and Bathurst Gold Tiara.

Interestingly,if you look back through his pedigree, there is a lot to like. His dam,Louisiana Lombo (N2 Bessie B family), is by Double Wipe,a grandson of West Australia’s and, in fact, oneof Australia’s best ever mares,Daintys Daughter.

LouisannaLombo is out of one of Australia’s best maternal lines, being out of Smooth Gale(by Smooth Fella). This makes her a half-sister to the dams of Lombo Pocket Watch, Lotsa Luv Lombo ($111,100), and Itdontmattertome ($114.788).

Mares by Perfect Art, Jet Laag, or carrying the bloodline of Windshield Wiper are great matches for this underrated stallion. Village Jasper mares also have performed well with Lombo Mandingo.
