The South Australian fires have affected the Harness Racing industry, properties and stock lost as the blaze raced through a large part of northern region, hardest hit was Mallala.
Trainer Phil Westbury and his partner Kerry Green lost everything they arrived home to find his property a blaze, the house and part of their team of horses perished in the blaze, some horses were able to be saved but their racing days are over.
Trainer Wayne Standish also lost his home, also affected was Claire Goble and Dennis Lyle of Clarenden Standardbreds some of their horses needed treatment but no loss of equine life.
Allenby Lodge Stud proprietor Stephen Norman moved all his stock to baron ground yesterday as the fire approached Kapunda. “we were lucky it was heading straight for usbut about 4,30pm the wind changed and it changed direction” Norman claimed.
“I am standing on top of the hill and can still see spot fires and hot spots but looks like the danger has passed” he added.
SA BOTRA have launched a collection at Globe Derby open on Saturday & Sunday between 10 – 2 also Saturday night to take donations they are asking for tinned or sealed goods, the same for horses and dogs & cats we are unable to take hay at this stage.
