Many years ago (1996) l had the pleasure of meeting the man that is responsible for changing my life for the better. His name, is Zig Zigglar, an author and extremely gifted speaker from America. Zig’s core message to me was “ YOU CAN ONLY DO GOOD DEALS WITH GOOD PEOPLE”. Every time I have drifted from this advice (which I’m sad to say has been too often) it has cost me a lot both personally and financially.
As the yearling sale roster moves to Perth, Zig’s message becomes clear in my head again, as buyers from the east have started calling me for my view on what yearlings are worth a look. Now, I don’t offer a service for selecting yearlings and it’s defiantly something l only do for close friends or people looking to enter the sport we all love for the first time, however each caller has been told to do 5 things.
- Are you dealing with the right people?
- Look at the stallion and that of other stallions with the same profile to a see if they have a record at achieving the goal or outcome you’re trying to achieve
- Look at the Dam (and mares with the same profile ) and her family if they have a record at achieving the goal or outcome you’re trying to achieve
- How has the cross of stallions with the same profile worked with dams of the same profile
- Its physical and mental attribute’s
It’s this point (1) that has way more importance than people tend to give it, and when l see the name Charles or KTC Bloodstock this is the type of confidence I need to be able to move to the next step (# 2) and start the process of running reports and pulling data.
The eastern state buyers have a real opportunity to bid with extreme confidence with the lots like those the Charles family have in the sale because we know they have the first of the 5 steps covered .
Tom Charles (the deceased grandfather of Kody) was a very well respected gentlemen in our sport. As an owner and trainer, he worked hard running a milk round and then went straight on to his real passion, horses. Was often in top 10 trainers in the state with only 4 to 5 horses in work. Tom ,trained great horses like Blue Pennant, Sir Alex, Rare Chief and Vandsman
Kevin Charles, along with his beautiful wife Annette, are 3rd generation harness racing tragics who used to have they own car yard and real estate business until their retirement in 1997. They now work harder than ever trying to improve the breed in WA and they are of the belief we can match it with the best and that appears to be working with thisbeachrightthere that we sold in Sydney. Kevin and Annette are in harness racing for the love of the game and they want to be up with the top breeders in Australasia. Kevin takes great pride in presenting yearlings at their best and follows them closely throughout their career
Now Kody, has taken up the challenge to drive the sport forward and l can’t think of a better young man to build on the great foundations his family have set before him.
This is a results based business, so when we look at the yearlings (20 in total ) sold by the Charles’s in 2015 (makes them 3yo’s) they have two group 1 winners in Lady Luca and Doalittlerocknroll, and a very solid achievement of 50% of their yearlings sold are now winners. These are the numbers that people should take great notice of.
