2Tough trotter Pocketfullofcash is on target for a strong display in the Group 2 $30,000 Ubet South Australian Trotters Cup (2645m) at Globe Derby Park on Saturday, January 9.

The ever-improving six-year-old returned to the winner’s list at Globe Derby on Saturday night in the Kalleske Chaff Trotters Discretionary (2230m).

Backed from $6.50 into $5.10, Pocketfullofcash, trained and driven by Paul Fidge, scored by 1-1/2 metres from Lysenko ($1.90 fav) with Rejuvenation ($5.20), 6-1/2 metres away third.

“The Cup is the race I have in mind,” Fidge said. “I’m not sure he will be good enough in two weeks, but I’m sure he will continue to get better and I think you will see a really good horse in 12 months.”

Pocketfullofcash had a slight letup after some good form during September and October.

The gelding, bred by Waylon Hornhardt and owned by Wade Knight, resumed on December 20 and ran very well when third to Rejuvenation when lack of racing took its toll over the final 100 metres.

With that run under his belt, Pocketfullofcash, sat second early on Saturday night behind the leader Siegfried before putting the pressure on 500 metres from home and going to the front.

Lysenko tried to make a race of it up the home straight but Pocketfullofcash was able to hold off his rival.

Rejuvenation ran on well for third but found the task of coming off 30 metres too much of an ask.

Fidge indicated to get further fitness into the gelding he would like to run him again next Saturday.

“I’m a bit bemused that a mobile start is programmed for next week,” Fidge said.

“You go from a stand tonight, to a mobile, then the stand for the cup the following week.

“I would have thought that it would have been a stand again next week to keep continuity leading up to the biggest race of the year.”

Fidge has done a wonderful job with Pocketfullofcash which was very unruly early his career but now is most reliable.

“He has grown half a brain,” Fidge said. “He knew nothing early on but is gradually learning what it is all about, and as I said, I think you won’t really see the best of him for another 12 months.”
