Perth APG Yearlings Sales Review: 4 of 7

Our next instalment of the sales circuit is the APG Perth edition held back on the 5th of March.

With 111 Lots catalogue by a total of 36 different sires on behalf of 31 consignors and 28 preparers

Kody Charles and Brittani Triplett not only were the preparers of the equal sales topping Lot 466 for $57,500, they also had the biggest team of 20 yearlings under their management from the weekend. The Charles Family along with the entire team from KTC Bloodstock are great people to have at the sales, while they are extremely professional at their trade, friendly and they are just so passionate about our sport.

The WA sale had a higher than normal standard of quality in the way the preparers had the yearlings looking, they as a group, where outstanding.  Many preparers from Perth like Mick Holtham of Allwood Stud (just to name one) should be really proud of the product they produced on the day, it was world class.

John Coffey is always very giving of his time, considering he was the MC at the yearling parade and a consignor on the day, he still had time for APG TV. For those who haven’t see this interview, take the time to watch it; John never disappoints. He is also a great supporter of sales both in Victoria and South Australia.

However if this trend continues and if I was in control of APG for just one day, these vendors would be left out of future sales if they didn’t want to give the buyers what they are asking for. If the sale reduces to only 60  or 70 yearlings from owners who do want to drive the sport forward, well so be it. The list below shows these vendors got close to 25% less for their yearlings for not making effort, what more evidence do they need? I really hope all vendors can address this as WA could have the best horse photographer in Australia, who will do a magnificent job at a very affordable rate. Please, please take this seriously.

If RWWA could provide a strong race card on the Saturday Night before the sale, I do believe this would help the breeders the following day.

I love going to Gloucester Park as l believe its by far the best race venue in Australia. If we had the yearling parade hosted by John Coffey between races on the night before it would just add to the whole experience in my mind. And who knows, it could just get a few new buyers to come to the sale the next day.

With a clearance rate of 84% and a sales average of $14,425, this is both a better clearance rate and a massive 11% better average on the previous year. Given the efforts of the hard work the staff at APG did, it really was a successful, enjoyable first sale in the west.

I’m also factoring in a completely different looking stallion roaster than what the eastern states have. The fact that so many people welcomed APG in their first year, plus the only real issue of the 40 yearling owners who didn’t get photos done.  It’s an A sales event from me this year.

Now that APG will be partnering/working with some truly outstanding organisations in the west (Pacing WA, Charles Family and Allwood Stud, just to name a few) as well as a much bigger consignment over the next few years of yearlings by stronger Sires out of better Dam families  (and a few little changes). Plus a very new exciting announcement that’s not far away, can’t say what it is just yet, this sale in my view will grow at a much faster rate than any other sale going forward in this country. It really is going to be exciting times ahead for Harness Racing in WA.

Brisbane will be the next sale under review.
