The ability to sum up a situation and pounce when your window opens has kept driver Greg Sugars at the top of the harness racing game for more than a decade.
Sugars, a professional driver of 16 years, has given an insight to his race philosophy to Andrew Kruuse, of RSN, in his new series People of Trots Racing.
“You obviously have a pre-race plan of where you think you might lob and know your horse’s ability,” Sugars said on the podcast.
“As the race is unfolding, when they take up their positions in mid-race, many times there is not a lot happening.
“It’s all about trying to judge the tempo and how much fuel you have spent with your horse, and those ones around you, and what they may do in the next few hundred metres, which might dictate the decisions that you make in the latter stages of the race.
“You just basically have to judge your horse and how it’s travelling at the time. That’s probably the main issue you have to be on top of and, of course, have a pretty good understanding of what’s going to happen around you so you can make your decisions accordingly.”
