Standing a young or any stallion at stud can have a wide list of challenges and l was always under the impression that the 3rd and 4thyears can be really difficult to maintain any real numbers given breeders like to sit back and see what those earlier 2yo’s are about to do.
So to give a good example of this, Sportswriter (in his first three years) did the following numbers in AUS
2011 he served 214
2012 he served 148
2013 he served 82
However this is not always the case and Alabar farms must be excited with one young gun, A Rocknroll Dance, who is on track (from the Testmating data l read ) to get very close towards 200 mares in Aus alone this year. This would give him a mighty start to his AUS career with his numbers from:
2015 he served 152
2016 he served 163
2017 on track for 190-200
This is a result that all parties should be really excited about because it lays a strong foundation for this young stallion going forward. Let’s not for forget his dad, the “super sire” Rocknroll Hanover’s biggest book in AUS was 237 mares back in the 2013 season.
Another stallion who is giving his connections a better chance of building a stronger base would be Lincoln Royal (Sir Lincoln in NZ), although his AUS numbers have been low until this year
2014 he served 27
2015 he served 8
2016 he served 33
2017 on track for 80-85 mares
Whilst the Lincoln Royal Aus numbers have been a bit slower to build, his results in NZ are very good, and he looks like getting close to 120 this year which would give him an average of 100 mares a year for the 4 season at stud in that country.
The excitement about his first crop of 2yo’s is staring to get momentum and if they go as well as the connections hope, it’s very possible this stallion will break through the triple figures in AUS next year.
