Duggan is a name that is wellrecognised in Tasmanian harness racing Ricky Duggan has been a leading driver in that state for many years. Ricky’s brother Adrian is also a leading trainer and drive in that state.
Now another Duggan has emerged to claimed Tasmania’s biggest race the Tasmanian Cup.
Ricky’s son Josh drove an outstanding race he partnered Victorian gelding Lets Elope to an impressive victory.
Josh Duggan had Lets Elope in the one-out line with cover until easing him out three then four-wide to make his run 500 metres from home.
His only danger in the run appeared to be Star Chamber, who was looking to go back to back in the Cup, was on his back but Lets Elope pulled out to many guns down the stretch, to win by 7 metres from Star Chamber with Outback Mach a further 20 metres away third.
Let’s Elope a 7 year old bred in New Zealand by Real Desire from the Sokys Atom mare Alta Vista.
Alta Vista isalso the dam of fast class pacer Five Star Anvil (by McArdle) 26 wins to date ($672,663), Belle Vista (Dream Away) 4 wins.
Josh Duggan (now 23) left Tassie as a 17 year old to work for Chris Alford and he has developed into one of the best young drivers in Victoria.
Duggan lost his claim at the beginning of this season told HarnessBred.com “I wasn’t coming home (Tassie) for Christmas but when Bret (Lilley) asked me to drive this fella I jumped at it.”
But this win in the Tasmanian Cup is not only his biggest win but one he will treasure forever.
