It was a really rough day for breeders that were trying to get a legitimate sale at Redcliffe on Sunday
Only 53 of 122 Yearlings catalogued (please note they had 10 yearlings withdrawn) found a new home by days end, with an embarrassing average of just $3,082.
I don’t care what spin some people will try and put on this, the truth is, results like this are just killing the people that for years have been giving their time, money and energy to keep Harness Racing going, “The Owners & Breeders”
The only way, l can see the above getting fixed, is for Darren Ebert & Co to change this system they use for the Redcliffe sale. The Ebert’s who are clearly well liked, and with a change in format are the right company to give the buyers the confidence that they are competing in a fair, open and honest market. Now I understand some vendors (57 from this year’s sale) just want to run their horses through the sale to make them eligible for the race; why can’t they just set a non-consigning entry for these breeders?
The only other sale run like Redcliffe, is South Australia, (which is sadly no blue print to follow). However after 2 years of us (harnessbred.com) having private discussions with them, they are very close to making a positive announcement about changing their terms & conditions before next year’s sale. This has come about because of BOTRA’S commitment to improving the sales experience for both the buyers and consignors. Now that BOTRA is developing a closer working relationship with the new SA board, this should also finally deliver a race for all sale graduates of a value that South Australians can be very proud of.
Queensland produces just north of 300 yearlings a year. I have no doubt that more than 100 of these yearling owners would happy to pay $1000, so they can be made eligible for the race without going through the hassle of going to Redcliffe where horses are not up for genuine sale. This would more than cover the cost of putting the race on. Plus a system like this would cost far less than the cost of preparing and commission they are currently paying.
This would also mean that the horses that go into the new Redcliffe sale (with a reserve system only) would attract far more interest as buyers would have the confidence that they are not biding against a non-selling vendor. Now before my in-box fills up with comments, yes some vendors will be still be found guilty of having their trainers/ friends run up the bids, put simply, just ban them.
The team at Darren Ebert & Co along with Redcliffe Harness racing club in my view owe it to the industry to change the format of this sale before it is too late. I just hope they have the courage and will to make this change ASAP.
Of the QLD base sires, good old Cammibest was the standout, the team at Burwood should be real proud of this ageing stallions efforts. Burwood (like a few smaller breeders) should also be congratulated as they do put up ever yearling for genuine sale and have done so for years.
