The Harness Jewels is on this Saturday at Cambridge Raceway Waikato some 114 km south of Auckland this will be the 10th running of the Jewels originally started at Ashburton in 2007.
A point of interest is that the classic event which rotates between Ashburton in the south island and Cambridge in the north has always over those 10 years kept their original homes, unlike the Australian Breeders Crown which has been swallowed up by metropolitan club Tabcorp Park Melton.
A few people close to the sport in the land of “the great white cloud” believe that the harness Jewels should be run on the Sunday of the New Zealand Queen’s Birthday weekend.
A lot has been made of the first seven of Saturdays Harness Jewels races being shown on Sky 1 in Australia but they will, as they were last year, just get lost in the busy day of racing once the Australian racing start..
At least as we have seen here in Australia that feature meetings such as Breeders Crown, Breeders Challenge in NSW and even Southern Cross Finals in Adelaide have drawn good crows, good media exposer and turnover.
