With the Sydney sale now just around the corner on March 3, a lot of talk about getting the balance right between the values that buyers put on the yearlings sires, and against family of the mares/dams these yearlings are from.
The term “Stallion Power” maybe a tad over played from time to time and by the studs that stand them and some people at these sales events (& I’m as guilty as anyone), however, it’s the stallions results that most get thrown around in open conversations.
The sires index list in Sydney has a mixture of proven stars, up and coming stars and a very small list of sires that have a low percentage return (for their owners and the breeders that have supported them).
Sires that have yearlings represented in the sale (127), and that have already had Group 1 success are:
A Rocknroll Dance | 8 |
American Ideal | 7 |
Art Major | 18 |
Bettors Delight | 24 |
For A Reason | 6 |
Four Starzzz Shark | 3 |

Now the remaining yearlings (66) are by sires yet to have Group 1 success. These are shown in the table below. Undoubtedly, most are yet to have their chance and this list could have serious edits this time next year.

I like really like to spend my time on looking for patterns that can help me with my discussions, and below is an example of this. The results of the best (earnings) race mares in our sport from AUS/NZ is the first table. The mares l have focused on are born before 2007, as this gives time to see enough data on their breeding history.
The column on the far right is the mares’ leading foal by earnings at this time. People will read into this data what they like, however, take the time to review it and see if you can make any conclusions from these results.
For those who also like to track North American data, the very bottom table is also very interesting.
