6Michael Grantham claimed the second series of the Garrard’s Junior Concession Driver Challenge after guiding the Gary Hall Snr-trained, James Galleon, to a determined win at Gloucester Park on Tuesday night.

James Galleon commenced a dominant $1.50 favourite, but didn’t have things go all his own way when he was made to work for the lead before staving off a spirited challenge from runner-up, Cayenne.

Grantham notched his second win from four drives in the series, elevating him to top spot and two points clear of Stuart McDonald and three points ahead of third placegetter, Kristy Sheehy.

Despite failing to drive a winner during the series, his best result a second placing on Itz Darknstormy at Bunbury, New Zealand-born McDonald maintains the overall lead.

The 21-year-old, who reached 100 career wins last December and partnered Our Blackbird in the Inter Dominion Final, holds a narrow advantage over, Kristy Sheehy.

Jocelyn Young is in third position while Grantham, a former leading apprentice rider, trails the leader by 10 points.

Grantham rode 97 winners in a 16-month careers as a jockey before making the transition to standardbreds.
