Champions are always hard to keep down, such was the case Sunday in Hobart with the running of the time honoured George Johnson when star mare Barynya returned to her best form to win the open class mares race.
In 2013 Barynya was Tasmania’s best two-year-old filly, and the next season she snared that state’s top three-year-old title and was also named Australia’s best three-year-old filly on the back of her Victorian Oaks success.
Trainer Dick Eaves was worried Barynya might have been one run short going into the George Johnson as the mare had only one start going into the George Johnson, but Eaves need not of had any concerns.
Driven a masterful race by Victorian Ian McMahon Barynya settled back in the field but never spent a penny in the run.
When McMahon released the brakes the mare ran past them like they were standing still and although getting tired near the line Barynya won by more than two metres from race leader Highview Christina, with Spitfire Rose almost four metres away in third spot.
Barynya is by Bliss, full Hall out of Lombo Anastasia a Perfect Art mare, was bred by Lyndon and Gail Menegon who would have been disappointed their star mare El Jays magic was a late scratching from the event.
Her dam Lombo Anastasia is also the dam of Lombo Navigator who finished third in the 2012 Inter Dominion Final to ImThemightyquinn, the mare has 2 year old by live Or Die and she has a foal at foot by A Rocknroll Dance.
