Accolades to drivers, trainers and the equine super stars of our tracks are common in our sport, but what about the others in our industry who keep our sport ticking over each and every day.
One such person behind the scenes … well, in this case, behind the lens, is Perth Photographer, Jodie Hallows.
Hallows is one of the best, if not THE best, harness racing photographers in the country.Who could argue with that after all her photos of the four horse finish of the Westbred 3yo colts and geldings final at Gloucester Park won the Joseph Coulter Media Award for 2015.
The daughter of Paceway Photos proprietors, Daryl and Cheryl Hallows, Jodie comes from a family steep in harness racing in the West. Her brothers, David and Brad, also have a strong involvement in the sport.
David was a leading junior driver before taking employment in the mining industry, and Brad is one of the state’s leading race callers.
Jodie has always been a horse lover. She worked for former leading thoroughbred breaker, Rod Bynder, and spent four years with top West Australian trainer, Ross Olivieri, before embarking on a position as a Corporate Travel Consultant – a position which took her to all parts of the world, including a Kentucky Derby.
On her return Jodie took up the camera and hasn’t looked back.
Her passion for the sport also extends to ownership. Jodie has a share in exciting pacer,Sky Art, who won nearly $50,000 in prize money last season. Sky Art is full brother to Kiwi champ,Sky Major, and she also has an interest in a two-year-old by Rocknroll Heaven purchased at the Melbourne APG Yearling sale.
Hallows told Harnessbred.com, “I just love the sport and are more than happy to support the industry. I make my photos available to the media. All they have to do is ask.”
While involved in harness racing ownership, Hallows is looking to obtain a thoroughbred training license.
“I am a rider. I love riding and having worked for Rod (Bynder) when he was alive, and in harness racing stables. I feel I have the experience to succeed,” she added.
But before then, Hallows hopes to go back to back with another Joseph Coulter Award.
