Victorian trainer Adam Kelly is targeting the Easter Cup on Easter Sunday with his stable star Five Star Anvil after his convincing win in Devonport on Sunday.
The time honoured Easter Cup has been won by some very good horses over the years including Quite Famous, Thorrate, Hayler My Lighting Blue and to name a few.
The race dates back to it first running in 1917 which was won by Rosebud which started off 180 yards over the 12 furlongs winning in a mile rate of 2.29.5 for the standing start.
The Easter Cup has long been the highlight of the Launceston Pacing Club and in recent years it has been run back as a traditional standing start race worth $40,000.
Five Star Anvil one of the best sons of McArdle to race in Australia will line up in a heat of the Cup this Sunday.
Despite his age of nine years Five Star Anvil has won 27 races and $718,088 in prizemoney. From the second crop of McArdle’s sired in the Southern Hemisphere Five Star Anvil is out of a Sokys Atom mare Alta Vista is also the dam of Lets Elope (Real Desire) the Tasmanian Cup this season.
Kelly also unearthed a new addition to his yard in ex New Zealander Highview Ruler a son of Elsu, Highview Ruler had 5 starts in” the land of the long white cloud ´ with his best effort a third placing down in the deep south at Gore. The four year olds Australian debut could not have been more impressive around the tight turning Devonport showgrounds.
