Former Cambridge trainer David Kaa has decided enough is enough.

So after 18 months officially away from training, he is back doing what he loves in Victoria.

Kaa resumes training a team of four this week after taking out his licence following a decent break from the industry.

The horseman shot to prominence training a team of castoffs a few years ago before tasting some success with age group horses, all on a limited budget.

Kaa moved to Australia two years ago and took time away from the industry to travel and see the world.

But after spending time working for Brent Lilley, the racing bug was biting too hard to ignore.

“So I’m back at it and raring to go,” Kaa told HRNZ.

“I enjoyed my time with Brent but Ants (Butt) was on at me telling me I should get back into training.

“And the property he and Sonya (Smith) were working from had some extra room so I have started back training there.

“It is Gavin Lang’s old property and Sonya is still going to train a small team from there so we will work into together.”

Kaa has a readymade flagbearer in former NZ open class trotter Leanne’s Boy, who won the South Australian Cup in January before starting to struggle for Lilley.

“He will be the biggest name of the four I have in work but I am keen to grow things and I already have the irons in the fire to get quite a good New Zealand horse across.

“And that is a market I’m really keen to target. Any New Zealand horses who are better off over here, and there are plenty with the way the handicapping system is, would be ideal.

“And then we have series over here all the time, like the Breeders Crown coming up, where sometimes people have horses eligible or even qualified but don’t want to make the trip.

“So I’m keen to talk to anybody who has an eye on Victoria because there are some really good opportunities.”
