Australia’s biggest owner Merv& Meg Butterworth claimed a double yesterday at the Auckland Cup meeting.
The Butterworth’s won with Eyre I Come a son of Majestic Son then their super filly Golden Countess had little trouble despite a bad barrier draw taking out the 3 year old fillies Sires Stakes Final.
Golden Countess is trained by the all-star team of Barry Purdon & Natalie Rasmussen, was bred in Australia by Weona Standardbreds.
The daughter of Art Major was purchased by the Butterworths at the 2014 Melbourne APG Sale for $101,000 and has now won six of her 7 race starts,
Golden Countess is out of a Christian Cullen mare called Localize, which failed to win at her six starts on the track.
Localize however is a half-sister to Sushi Sushi , being out of former great race mare Sabilize (by No Nukes)
Sabilize won 31 of her 54 starts plus 13 placings one of those placings was a second to New Zealnd champion Chokin in the 1993 Miracle Mile and a third to Iraklis in the 96 Miracle Mile at her final race start.
A close relation to Golden Countess will go under the hammer at this year’s APG Melbourne sale on February 7 – in lot 90 a bay colt by Roll With Joe from a half-sister to the dam of Golden Countess Specialize.
The Butterworths who own this year’s New Zealand cup winner Arden Rooney also shocked Victorian officials this week when their announced their star won’t line up in the Victoria Cup but will defend his title in the Hunter Cup a week prior.
