This is another in an occasional series looking at some of New Zealand’s trotting broodmare gems, Passive also being a broodmare centurion.

Race winning U Scott trotting mare Passive founded an extensive branch of the Violet M family producing many notable progeny during her fruitful broodmare career.

PASSIVE (1941f U Scott/Violet Wrack; a member of the Violet M family, CF N26) : T2:13.8, $3,058; ten foals, one died, all eight who raced were winners (seven trotters, one pacer). Bred by Dan Robertson, Hakataramea farmer and all foals bred by Bill (WJ) Doyle.

Doyle considered Passive sufficiently forward to entertain racing against the pacers in the two year old Sapling Stakes but a broken leg at the socket to the knee meant she was in a plaster cast for over a year. Passive was unraced until five years of age winning two races at Greymouth and as a six year old at Kaikoura. A winner at New Brighton on the grass at seven with her final victory at Addington in January 1950 when aged eight, retiring with a career record of four wins and fourteen placings. In the broodmare barn she left winners of seventy races in NZ and 43 in North America. Passive died September 1971.

Passive’s dam Violet Wrack (1929f Wrack), T2:17¼, $1,778) bred by Dan Robertson, shown as residing at Islington, a Christchurch suburb. Leased by Bill Doyle from Robertson as a nine year old winning three races for owner/trainer/driver Doyle in the 1938/9 season including a double at Greymouth in January 1939 and on the grass at New Brighton in February. The winner of six races (others for McDonald and Fahey – two at Westport including dead heat, tr RJ Humphreys, Templeton, dr Jack Pringle; Mrs I Gibson, winner at Hutt Park for tr/dr A  Butterfield, Addington), Robertson offered Doyle Violet Wrack’s first foal which was Passive.

All four of Violet Wrack’s foals were bred by Dan Robertson when residing at Hakataramea, sixty kilometres west of Waimate, South Canterbury. Her two winners being Passive and Kowhai who had four wins, T2:12.4, $2,718 (two at Methven, Geraldine, Ashburton), dam of six foals for four trotting winners – Yon Bairn (three), Grand Charge (eight, two Addington, one Alexandra Park), Big Charge (six), Johnny Kowhai (six) and Kowhai Craig, dam of three winners. Jasmine, unraced half-sister of Passive, third dam of Lord Hanover, four wins, 2:06.8, $13,625, Hawera Cup.

Grand dam Violet Wilkes (1919f Marvin Wilkes) bred by H Saunders, Waimate. Unraced, her six foals resulted in Violet Wrack (as above) being her only winner. Many of Passive’s foals were bred on the golden cross of U Scott over a Light Brigade mare (six of ten foals). Passive’s male progeny include :

Asia Minor, first of Passive’s male progeny was the winner of fifteen races (T2:05.6) with eleven of these at Addington. Major victories included the NZ Trotting Stakes – 3 at his sixth start (now NZ Trotters Derby), Greyhound Hcp, ID heat at Forbury Park, Stewards Trotting FFA and NZ Trotting Championship (heat/final) and third in Canterbury Park Trotting Cup. Trained and driven by owner Bill Doyle in the majority of his victories he set a NZR for 1¼m mobile in the open class Stewards Trotting FFA of T2:37.0 on second night of Addington New Year’s meeting (3 January 1966).

Wipeout, ten win pacer (six Addington, two Alexandra Park) racing in NZ between ages five to nine, 2:03.3, $11,895, including open class pace double at Auckland TC Winter meeting (CF Mark and Adams Memorials) followed up with a win in his next start early in the following season, Louisson Hcp at Addington. The winner of a further thirty nine races in North America, 2:04.1 at Pocono Downs on 20 June 1973 when aged thirteen with combined earnings of $50,051

When, was an outstanding trotting mare, both on the track and in the broodmare paddock. When commenced racing at four years of age at the Geraldine meeting on 27 February 1960. Sixth in her first start she went on to record three victories at four – Timaru, Oamaru (third earlier same day) and Addington.

A further three wins came at five in a season where When also placed on six occasions from  twelve starts. Wins were at New Brighton (grass) and a double at Addington in December 1960 CPTC Stewards Hcp and February 1961 HF Nicoll Hcp, 2 miles on ID Grand Final day.

Six wins and three places at six included graduation to open class with her win in the Winter Hcp at Addington in August 1961. Following a fourth in the NZ Trotting FFA, When managed five wins in the period from January to May 1962 – CPTC Stewards and Hornby Hcps on consecutive nights at Addington (1/2 January), third win in consecutive races in New Brighton’s Autumn Hcp (grass), second in Reta Peter Hcp with wins in NZ Hambletonian and LS Smart Trotting FFA at Addington all in consecutive race starts. When was leading trotting stake earner of 1961/2 season ($8,100).

Retaining the theme of recording the same number of victories as the season before, another six victories and three placings were recorded at seven. These started with Winter Trotting FFA in August 1962, third in Worthy Queen Hcp on NZ Cup Day, second to Spencer Scott in the Dominion Hcp before winning the NZ Trotting FFA. After a fifth in the Greyhound Hcp, When remained undefeated for the season – Ashburton, CPTC Flying Mile**, Hutt Park Royal meeting with Queen Elizabeth II and Duke of Edinburgh in attendance and New Brighton (grass). When was again leading trotting stake earner for 1962/3 season ($9,190).

** NZ trotting mares and all comers mile record of T2:02.8 set at Addington on 2 Jan 1963 not beaten for fourteen years (Petite Evander 12 Feb 1977 T2: 02.2 and then T1:59.8TT on 12 Mar 1977). When’s sectionals were 30, 61, 1:32, 2:02.8 in beating Dianthus Girl’s record of T2:03.4. The all comers record of T2:02.8 was beaten by Control’s T2:02.4TT in 1964 (Manawatu Raceway) and Stylish Major’s T2:02.4 race mile on 1 January 1969 at Addington. When held the Australasia trotter’s race mile record for six years until Stylish Major’s T2:02.4.

When winning in USA

Following When’s 2 March 1963 victory at New Brighton (eighteenth in forty three starts), she embarked on a North American venture. Invited to contest an International Trotting series in New York, When had a number of starts when based at Yonkers, her record showing : first start at Yonkers on 18 April 1963, finished second to Italian trotter Firestar in $45,000 Trans-Oceanic Trot; sixth in $60,000 International on 25 April; fifth in $8,750 trot on 2 May; second in $25,000 event to trotter Orbiter with When driven by Doyle’s son in law Dennis Nyhan who with daughter Denise were part of When team; fifth in Roosevelt International Trot (Roosevelt Raceway) to Stanley Dancers trotter Su Mac Lad (1¼m in T2:32.4); third to Porterhouse and second to Air Meal at Yonkers in August 1963.

Doyle and company returned to New Zealand leaving When in the care of Austrian Sacher Werner. Werner managed When’s solitary USA win in a $7,500 Invitational Trot at Yonkers on 12 September 1963, trotting the mile in T2:04.4. After qualifying for Werner at Yonkers in June 1964, When had her final USA start finishing sixth to Pack Hanover in the $45,000 Trans-Oceanic Trot at Yonkers on 25 June 1964. Six months quarantine in England prior to returning by ship to New Zealand, her North American record was fourteen starts (excluding qualifier) for one win and four placings, T2:04.4US, $30,112.

Sacher Werner

Back in New Zealand for the 1965/6 season (aged ten), When managed a win and five placings from eleven starts, winning the Banks Peninsula Trotting Cup in her first seasonal start at Motukarara on grass in early October 1965 in track record time. Placings included fourth in Worthy Queen Hcp, third in NZ Trotting Championship (third/fourth in heats). At eleven, an opening fourth in the Banks Peninsula Trotting Cup was followed by her final and unplaced start in the Worthy Queen Hcp on NZ Cup Day 1966. When’s NZ record was 56 : 19 – 6 – 11, £12,745. USTA Pathway stats show her total earnings as $70,110.

The dam of eight foals, all raced with seven winning (six trotting) races. Her foals included :
