Better To Be Bad, the winner of 11 races, has fractured a pastern in a hind leg and it is hoped to save her for breeding.

The injury was disclosed in an X-ray of the 8yr-old mare after she pulled up lame from a trial at Forbury Park on Saturday.

“She has fractured a pastern and we are trying to save her for breeding. There is quite a bit of separation and the vet will put a cast on her leg today.’’ said Steve Ashton, her Portobello trainer on Tuesday. “We had considered screwing but she would have to travel to Invercargill for the operation and she may have not been up to that.’

Better To Be Bad won 11 races and gained 23 minor placings in 90 starts for $103,848 in stakes for owners, Ashton, Miles Notman and breederGavin Chin. The daughter of Badlands Hanover – Simply Scrumlicious won the final of the Southern

Belle series at Winton in 2013 in 1.54.4 and the 2012 Waimate Cup.

“She has been a part of our life,’’ said Ashton. He qualified Better to Be Bad at Oamaru in October, 2010.
