This is the ninth of an occasional series of articles reviewing multiple classic producing broodmares with five or more offspring in results information as shown on the Classic Families (CF) database. A number of these mares won classic races, became the dams of classic winners/progeny and contributed to the genetic inheritance of numerous outstanding performers.
LAURICKS PRIDE (1979 Dales Gift/Jennaval), Australian family of Jessie by Osterley II (A31), unraced; 21 foals, 19 raced for 14 winners. Breeder : W, JL, LP & N Hardy, VIC; Foals all bred by WR Hasty, VIC except for Aubrietta (WR & JL Hasty, VIC – first foal)
Sire Dales Gift was by Dale Spring (Abbedale) from NZ import Sandydale out of NZ Oaks winner Perpetua by Springfield Globe. Perpetua was from Wrack mare Wracks Advice from Blue Mountain King (Auckland Cup) mare Free Advice (NZ Cup heat), a branch of Pride Of Lincoln (N1) family. Dales Gift, 2:05.4, was Dale Spring’s best advertisement, winner of 51 races including NSW Sapling, SA/VIC Derbies, ID heats (2)/third in final, numerous open class paces and second ever mobile winner from the Smith (and Martin) barrier in June 1965 at Harold Park, 2:08.4 one mile on a wet track.. It was his siring achievements that made an even greater impact on Australian breeding. Siring 100 winners including Marching Order (SA Derby), Pascinelle (VIC SS – 3c), Super Gift (VIC Oaks heat/final). Broodmare sire of 157 winners including Imprimartar (NSW Derby, Fremantle Cup) and Lauricks Pride’s progeny as described below.
Unraced dam Jennaval (Ardri/Vivial Raider) was out of a Raider mare in Janet Raider. Her full sisters Ardeecee and Stormy Star (dam of Doxa Joe, 1:53.4US, $325,833), were both winners and left winning progeny. Jennaval left seven foals, three of whom won races : Ritual Fire (2:14.5, 1 VIC win at St Arnaud), Start Again (2:09.7, $3,018, 2 Rocklea wins), Pointed Dart (T2:08.9, $7,302, 7 (2 VIC/5 SA [3 Globe Derby]) wins) and Lauricks Pride who was unraced.
This is the family of Jessie by Osterley II (A31), born in 1910’s whose descendants include Raiarmagh (Raider over Globe Derby mare), who in a brief career won 19 of 22 starts, 1945 SA Derby; sire of 187 winners, Raiarmagh Pool, Patsys Gift, Gentle Armagh, Bindaboo Major; broodmare sire of 272, Harogwen, Macaree). Others to feature for Jessie were Diggers Idol (AUST Trotters Championship heat/final), Her Sparky Self (see below), Bus To Harland (APG – 2c), Gem of Reibey (SA Oaks), Prettylilangeleyes (T1:55.8TT as 2yo).
