This is the eighth of an occasional series of articles reviewing multiple classic producing broodmares with five or more offspring in results information as shown on the Classic Families (CF) database. A number of these mares won classic races, became the dams of classic winners/progeny and contributed to the genetic inheritance of numerous outstanding performers.

 

MAGGIES REPORT (1967 Good Report/Sure Maggie), Australian family of Sure Peg (A106), unraced; 9 foals, 6 raced for 6 winners. Breeder : M & B McLinden, VIC; Foals bred by : B & M McLinden, VIC (Dancing Report, Kanders Report, Delvins Report, Smart Report, Morgans Report); BP & MJ McLinden, VIC (Another Report. Sire Good Report was one of Noel Simpson’s Italian trotting purchases in the 1950’s when it was almost impossible to import American stallions into Australia. Good Report, bred by Count Orsi Mangelli, raced in Italy under the name of Perosso was by De Sota (Peter Volo/Symphonia by Guy Axworthy) from Esperita, a full sister of champion trotter Rosalind and her brothers Medoro and Florindo also imported by Simpson. Simpson had Good Report shipped to New Zealand but he had negotiated his lease to Edgar Tatlow so he was sent over to Victoria to Tatlow’s prior to standing at stud at Mooroopna for Chris Howe. Good Report sired 60 winners, one of the few stallions to have left more trotting winners (32) than pacing counterparts (28). They included Annual Report (Dominion Hcp), Nelsons Report (VIC Trotters Derby) and his best son Tinmine (Aust Trotters Championship twice). As a broodmare sire his 138 winners included Rival Lass/Dancing Report (VIC Trotters Derby), Purple Note (VIC/SA Trotters Derbies), Garrison Report (WA Derby). Jodie Armagh (Dullard Cup), Beau Power (Aust Trotters Championship), El Cordobies (NSW/SA Trotters Derbies, SA Trotters Cup), Fiery Luck (Cochran Cup, ID Trotters consolation).

 

Dam Sure Maggie (2:07.6, $5,077½), was by Baffelan from the Quite Sure foundation mare Sure Peg. Sure Maggie was the winner of 6 races, two for CA King (Greymouth/Timaru) and four for FW Adamson (Forbury Park [2], Greymouth, Hutt Park). The dam of six foals including Maggies Report (see below), Sure Hanover, T2:15.3, $810, dam of a winner and Wee Vance, dam of 2 winners.

 

This is the A106 family of Sure Peg (T2:23.2, $1,070), bred in NZ by J Turnbull, Mosgiel, winner of two races at Oamaru and Invercargill. She was the dam of five foals bred by A Woods including

  • Sure Josephine (Baffelan filly), $90, non-winner placed in T2:19 2/5
  • Sure Patrick (Medoro colt), T2:08.0, $2,470, three wins at Westport, Hutt Park and Addington
