This is the eleventh of an occasional series of articles reviewing multiple classic producing broodmares with five or more offspring in results information as shown on the Classic Families (CF) database. A number of these mares won classic races, became the dams of classic winners/progeny and contributed to the genetic inheritance of numerous outstanding performers.
BARRINGTON LASS (1982 Holly Sand/Ann Byrd), Australian family of Black Annie (A41), 2:10.0, $2,766; 20 foals, 17 raced for 15 winners. Her sire Holly Sand (2:00.1US, $91,261) was by Tar Heel from an Adios mare in Adios Martha (2:06.2USTT, $3,464), the dam of numerous winners including LT Byrd, half-brother of Holly Sand (sire of Tango Brava NSW Trotters Derby); grand dam of Keystone Presto/Keystone Smartie (Tattersalls Pace), sires Alba Byrd (stood in NZ, sire of Albas Reign, Elmer Gantry, The Bru Czar) and Fellowship (Executioneer, NSW SS 2c/3c); 4th dam of Noble Intent, 1:50,2US, $580,543, Silky Shark 1:49.2US; 5th dam of Mr Hallowell, 1:48.3US. Holly Sand was a full brother in blood to NZ based sire Armbro Del (second dams were Helen Win). Holly Sand sired 174 winners/155 in Australia (a good percentage sire; 155 winners from 434 live foals = 35.7%) including Ark Raider, Gerry Neptune, Lea Sands. He was broodmare sire of 213 winners in Australia with a large proportion of his progeny racing in Tasmania.
Her dam Ann Byrd was a lightly raced pacing half-sister ($0) to Miss Conroy 2:08.0, $10,646, 11 (9 TAS [6 Launceston]/2 VIC [1 Melbourne Showgrounds]) wins, dam of Arma O’Grady 2:02.0, $20,401 (8 TAS wins). Ann Byrd was out of Annies Design (2:16.2), a winner producing mare by Raiders Design from Annie Ash out of Black Annie. Ann Byrd left 12 foals for nine winners including full sisters to Barrington Lass in :

This is also the family of another multiple producing broodmare in Gorse Bush (dam of Beautide), the subject of a future article. This family is made up of mostly Tasmanian descendants with numerous juvenile winners mentioned as part of Barrington Lass’s immediate family.
Barrington Lass (2:10.0, $2,766) won her first ever start as a two year old at Hobart, recording a further six placings at two/three from sixteen starts before retirement to the breeding barn at four. Bred every season from 1986 onwards (20 foals – 12 colts, eight fillies), with only one unnamed 1987 Nickylou colt (first foal), a somewhat inauspicious start!!, missing in 2003 to Astreos and slipping 2008 – 2010 to Art Major. Barrington Lass (2 VIC/rest TAS servings) equalled the Australasian record of 15 winning foals (four in two minutes) held by Lovely Lawn (18 foals in NSW) and Rustic Maid (19 foals, 2 died before naming) in NZ when Bymarjac won at Launceston in late November 2012. Her foals have won 180 races and $999,751 (nine year old Bymarjac lone surviving runner to get her past the million dollar mark) in stake money to 3 July 2017. The dam of then fastest Australian bred female pacer in Barrington Belle (1:51.3US). Her four named non winners were Dittman (two fourths from seven 2yo starts), Ocean Lord (one unplaced start as 5yo at Mount Gambier), Avaricious (qualified, unraced, dam of four unnamed foals) and Atlarak (unraced, see below). Barrington Lass is a member of Tasmanian Hall of Fame.
