Article by APGTV’s Dean Baring.
When APG entered into a partnership with Harnessbred four years ago, the mission was to build a better way of communicating with their loyal buyers , consignor’s and preparers.
APG were keen to make a better connection for all parties involved and bring a fresh, new way of acknowledging some of the magnificent people we have in the sport we love.
The result of this partnership was the birth of APGTV, a new web channel that would provide coverage of the APG Sales and Race Series, showcasing some of APG’s outstanding yearlings but also shining a light on some stars in our sport that go unnoticed from time to time.
Well four years in and having just rolled over the 1,000 interview mark, some of you may think should we be showing some signs of improvement by now. (l’ve been told from a young age I was a slow leaner) l can tell you, it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done, being able to showcase some of the tremendous people in the harness racing industry.
It’s true we have a lot of fun and two clips have almost bought me to tears. The first one was watching Wayne and Lyn Graham winning the Group 1 fillies final at Menangle with Park Life back in April of 2016.
The joy and happiness was written all over Wayne’s face that night as he looked over to his wife Lyn. That look will never be lost on me. It was spine tingling. The family and connections that night were so giving of their time and I often watch that clip back as it still has an effect on me today.
The other clip from back on the 6th May 2017 that also rocked my nervous system was interviewing what I thought was the “Worlds Proudest Father “ Ian Caruana after his son Anthony’s filly Nostra Beach won the fillies final at Melton. To see the excitement of both Anthony and Mervat celebrate the win with more 30 staff members and family, it was a sight to behold.
The clip that holds number one for someone trying to display their professionalism at the highest standards while we had a microphone in her face would have to be the interview of Virginia Brosnan while she was scoping a horse. Virginia in my view was unbelievably fascinating.
Not only is Danny Zavitsanos a great fella for our sport, he always starts our interviews with “ My wife better not be watching this, she thinks I’m at work “ – he gets me every time.
Glenn Holland who is also awesome with his time, once told me “I hope my wife doesn’t see this she thinks I’m out buying us a family home with this money”
People like Justin Baker. Matty Craven, Rob Essex, The WA group of the Padbergs, the Gianni’s, the Walmsley’s are so good with their time not to mention the Alchin’s, Robbie Morris , Michael Stanley, Brett Coffey, David James, and Mark Hughes – I need to stop now as I could mention 100’s of incredible people that have been so kind.
I also need to single out Annie Dalton because she was my very first ( interview that is ) and while I had no idea 4 years ago how this really was going to work, l soon discovered, I only needed to ask people like Annie one question and they would set the scene for a fantastic clip. Thanks Annie, you gave me the confidence that this would work and deliver real value to the industry. You are my APG TV all time Champion.
That said, we are now going to upload a Dean’s pick of a past interview every day on facebook from now to the end of the sales season. The best way each and every person can help build the brand of harness racing to better heights is to please share every clip on your own person and business page on Facebook. Together we can make a difference. The person that makes the best contribution in sharing these clips will get a special prize from the APG TV team. It will be better than a red cap, guaranteed.
