The team at Goodtime Racing are of the view the Sydney APG 2019 sale can’t come quick enough. When we caught up with Courtney today, she went on to say, “Put simply, we just love the weekend and we feel it’s a sale that has the balance right, good place ( world class facility ) for consignor’s to sell and a great place for buyers to invest into a yearling with a chance of making a successful racing career”.

For those who don’t know, Sydney APG was the sale location that Goodtime purchased the Group 1 winning Goodtime Heaven back in 2016. At the time Courtney’s father,  Ian made the journey north with one thing on his mind and that was to purchase Lot 366 . After he and Clayton Tomkin viewed the lot , the Goodtime team had the confidence to part with the $65,000 needed to secure the filly. This investment has now been proven to be a very astute buy.

Goodtime Heaven was on fire last season winning her last 8 of 9 races , until a spider bite caused a lengthy stint on the side lines. Her record now stands at 12-9-0-0 with earnings so far of $155,527.

Goodtime were active again last weekend at the Melbourne sale both as a preparer and a buyer, purchasing Goodtime Heaven’s half-brother for $26,000 (refer to first video below). It’s fair to say that Ian and Courtney like the family, because they had also purchased a Somebeachsomewhere half-brother to Goodtime Heaven from the 2018 sale for $40,000 (shown bottom).

The Goodtime team make a great point, as Sydney has a great history of providing good horses a great prices. If fact Ian and a pedigree consultant looked at heading over  to New Zealand with the view of purchasing some yearlings. However, after reviewing what turns out to be (lack of) eligibilities for those yearlings once brought  back into Australia, the opportunity to recoup an investment is reduced. Plus what looks like a really poor earnings  record of the high price yearlings purchased by Australian owners, has convinced the team that Sydney is by far a better option at this stage.

I think it would be really interesting in the future to check what the returns have been over the journey for Aussie buyers of yearlings out of NZ, because whilst there is no doubt that there are plenty of quality yearlings in New Zealand, I reckon that the extra shipping and importation costs, combined with the lack of Australian race eligibilities for those horses puts Australian buyers at a massive disadvantage compared to what they could pick up for the equivalent price at the APG sales.

While the Melbourne sale had a lot of hype around the “Stallion Power” and rightly so, don’t dismiss the fact that Sydney has over 90 Lots by the world’s best sires

American Ideal

Art Major

Bettors Delight

Captaintreachous

Mach Three

Roll With Joe

Somebeachsomewhere

Sweet Lou

While the Melbourne sale failed to offer up any Sweet Lou’s, I would be very surprised if his lots didn’t command some serious interest in Syndey.

With a slight pause until the next APG sales event in Sydney, its gives us more time to research the keys in this Sydney Sale and that is the maternal Families of the lots on offer. The example below of Bella Joy’s Progeny ( in my view )  clearly demonstrates the value of the mare power.

I would encourage anyone who is dreaming about finding the next Supersonic Miss to invest the time in  looking at the dams of the yearlings in the sale.

JUKEBOX MUSIC CHRISTIAN CULLEN NZ $334,301

THUNDA DOWN UNDA ROCK N ROLL HEAVEN USA $2,642
GOODTIME HEAVEN ROCK N ROLL HEAVEN USA $155,527

Like the team at Goodtime, l can’t wait until the Sydney sale at the end of the month. So do your research and  reap the rewards.  Just imagine the thrill of selecting the next APG winner.

Don’t forget the person that makes the best contribution in sharing these clips will get a special prize from the APG TV team. It will be better than a red cap, guaranteed.
