As is tradition, this years Broodmare of Excellence award was presented at the New Zealand Standardbred Breeders Association (NZSBA) NZ Cup Eve function (Monday 9 November).

 

The In The Pocket mare Winter Rose (2000) from speedy Peoples Blue Chip mare Bella Chip (1:52.3), bred by former HRNZ Chairman Jim Wakefield and Dr Susan Wakefield and owned by John Stiven, took out the prestigious award. John Stiven is currently on the Committee of the Southland branch of NZSBA. An active breeder, previously in conjunction with his late mother Noreen, he has tasted considerable success with the “Arden” breed at yearling sales, in the breeding barn and on the racetrack.. His property of Arden Lodge is located at Tapanui.

 

From only nine starts as a two and three year old when trained by Cran Dalgety, Winter Rose recorded just the solitary victory in a NZ Sires Stakes 2f heat at Addington, beating home Imagine That in a 2:00.3 mile rate (total earnings of $10,560). Winter Rose’s dam Bella Chip (full sister to Lento) won five races in NZ (Methven Breeders Stakes, $20,720) before her export to North America where she was successful in 1:52.3US (further stake earnings of $110,400). She is also the dam of Bellas Boy, the winner of 16 races in NZ, Australia and North America (1:52.0US, over $400k, Breeders Crown – 2c, Victoria Derby, Junior FFA). Bella Chip is by Peoples Blue Chip from Orbell, by Patron Score from Light Chase, by Good Chase from Witchlight (dam of Trident), by Local Light from Witcha, by Stormyway from Watcher, by Grattan Loyal from Selene, Guy Parrish from Locanda Belle, by Brent Locanda from Miss Effie Bells, by Abbey Bells from Effie, by Electioneer from Maud by Berlin.

 

The family of Maud by Berlin (CF N37), contains stand out descendants such as Master Musician, Royal Gaze, Awesome Armbro, Trident, Leading Light, Philemon, Armbro Wings, Lento, Shortys Girl, Whanau, Bellas Boy, Bettors Strike, Venus Serena.

 

Winter Rose has been a very successful broodmare. From her ten foals to date, she has had 7 winners and 2 qualifiers with 7 in two minutes (including qualifier). Between them they have won 3 Group 1’s, a group 2, 2 group 3’s and a listed race.
