23 March 2021 | Peter Staples for Tasracing

In 1993 a young Kerryn Manning delivered a brilliant performance to notch her first win as a harness driver.

Astute pundits were predicting big things from the daughter of top trainer Peter Manning after she guided Gorgeous Gambit to victory in May 1993 at Ararat, and it was fitting that her first winner was prepared by her Dad.

Those who predicted Manning would carve a successful career from the industry were spot-on with the girl raised at Great Western in Victoria the most winningest harness driver in the world.

Earlier this year Manning registered her 4000th winner when she partnered Glenavril King to victory at Stawell, the town she now calls home.

Manning was in Tasmania last Sunday to participate in the Australian Female Drivers’ Championship in Launceston and while she didn’t fare well in that series, won by Queensland’s Danielle Vievers, she managed to snare a winner in the last race on the card.

The champion trainer-driver partnered the Juanita McKenzie-trained Isaac to victory in a NR 75-105 over 2200m to give the horse and trainer confidence heading into a heat of the Easter Cup at the same venue this Sunday night.

“I was very impressed with the way Isaac went about winning his race and I’m sure he can be competitive in whatever Juanita (McKenzie) aims him at for the rest of his prep,” Manning said.

“It’s always nice coming to Tassie to drive and I enjoy the AFDC series because it’s always very competitive when us girls get to race against each other.”

Manning was presented with a special trophy to mark her 4000th winner with the presentation delivered by Margaret Reynolds, who is a member of the Harness Racing Australia Board and that of Racing Queensland.
