6Wingara added to his imposing race record en route to claiming the Nixon’s Engineering Wagga Cup on Friday night.

The four-year-old pacer added his name to the list of pacers to claim the Wagga and Albury Cups in the same year but he won’t push on towards the Young Cup on Saturday night.

Instead, trainer and part-owner Peter Romero will start the star gelding in the Wangaratta Cup.

“It was always the plan to go to Wangaratta after Albury and then Wagga was also so on so it’s nice to be able to win this race as well,” Romero, who hails from Chiltern in Victoria, said.

Wingara was the second Wagga Cup success for reinsman Nathan Jack who hails from Uranquinty just outside of Wagga.

Jack said Wingara had a touch of class and his plan to race outside of the leader and his main danger, Sporty Spook, paid dividends.

“He is very fast and tough,” Jack said.

“I love coming back to Wagga for the big meetings and to win the Cup again is always a special time.”

There is no telling where Wingara could end up as he has already been able to win ten of his 15 starts.

Last campaign, Wingara announced himself winning seven of his first eight starts and Romero knows he can aim up at any of the country cups and be competitive.

“He is the best horse I have had. I race him with the family and we also bred him,” he said.

Meanwhile, Roarn produced his best first-up from a spell to win the Wagga Derby.

Having his first start since racing in Queensland in July, Roarn showed he will again be a force with an all the way win for trainer Kristin Cunningham and driver Scott Osmond.

The win pushed Roarn’s earnings past $50,000with his fourth win from 13 starts.

The Wagga Oaks was the middle leg of a treble for trainer Steve Turnbull as his daughter Amanda guided Cherry Mahoney to success.

Cherry Mahoney and the runner-up Gotta Bewitched cleared out to fight out the finish with the favourite beating her main danger by just over two metres.

Steve Turnbull won another of the features with Joes Star Of Mia winning the Rising Stars 2yo at big odds after Lexus On The Beach, driven by Mitch Turnbull, took out race two.
