A RETURN to South Australia has gained instant results with handy pacer Whenmechief.

Successful at five of his last six starts during his previous SA campaign, which includes a third in the state’s Pacing Cup, Whenmechief’s form dropped when switched back to Victoria in March, failing to run a placing from five outings.

Back to his favourite venue – Globe Derby – during the weekend, Whenmechief made an instant return to the winners’ circle for trainer Darren Billinger.

Billinger prepared the son of Stonebridge Regal during his previous SA preparation.

Thrilled with the gelding’s performance, Billinger has no doubt Whenmechief is ready to dominate the local free-for-all ranks.

“He has been back for a few weeks and his work has been good, so I knew he was ready to run a big race,” Billinger said.

“In the end he did it quite easily and won with a bit up his sleeve.

“All things being equal, he is a genuine winning chance every week at Globe Derby and will be the one to beat on most occasions.”

Setting his sights on the Strathalbyn Cup in a fortnight, Billinger will race the six-year-old in each suitable event on the calendar.

“Strathalbyn’s Cup will be the next target for him,” Billinger said. “After that he will potter around in the free-for-alls, which will really suit him.

“I can’t see any reason why he can’t continue his winning ways over here.”
