WAGGA will conduct a qualifier next Tuesday night for next month’s $30,000 Southwest Stockfeeds Wagga Pacers Cup.

The Cup will carry Group 3 status on Saturday night, March 4, and has doubled in prizemoney from last year when taken out by Wingara.

The $10,000 qualifier is for Southwest and Riverina trained pacers with the first two pacers to finish exempt from the ballot for the Cup.

Wagga trainer Brian Smith is hoping to have Mammals Flash in the field in a bid to qualify for the Cup which his business will sponsor for the second time.

Mammals Flash has been in strong form at Wagga, but disappointed connections last start when unplaced.

However, Smith feels the horrendous heat in the region may have impacted on Mammals Flash last start and he is hopeful of having him back to his best for the qualifier.

The qualifier will enable local horses the opportunity to qualify with a quality line-up of horses form outside of the region expected to contest the Cup.

It’s unlikely Wingara will be back to defend his title as he hasn’t raced for several months, but indications are some of the best recent cup performers will be there.

Menangle trainer Shane Sanderson has the Wagga Cup as an option for Chantrey who led all of the way to take out the Canberra Cup.

Fellow Menangle trainer Shane Tritton is also keen on the race and some of the support events which include the $10,000 Wagga Derby, $9000 Wagga Oaks and $8000 Two-Year-Old Rising Stars.
