Several members of the WA Trotting Media Guild have labelled promising mare Our Alfie Romeo as their star bet for Friday night’s meeting at Gloucester Park.
Multiple winner of the Guild’s tipping competition Stuart Lowe, longshot king Pat Harding, TABradio’s Matt McDermott, RWWA’s racing communications co-ordinator Tim Walker and The West Australian’s racing co-ordinator Ryan Havercroft all believe Our Alfie Romeo will score an all-the-way victory in the eighth race at headquarters.
Lowe spoke for his colleagues when he said Our Alfie Romeo was poised to make it four in a row from the prized pole draw.
“My best bet is the ever consistent mare Our Alfie Romeo, who has won eight of 11 this season,” he said. “Looks to have a class edge on her rivals and is advantaged by the draw here.”
The West Australian’s Ernie Manning, whose namesake scored on debut on Tuesday, believes the impressive Caviar Star can continue on his winning way.
“Caviar Star looks set to further boost his impressive standing-start record, which is two wins from four races,” Manning said. “There was a lot of merit in his victory from a stand two weeks ago when he scored convincingly after racing three-wide. The New Zealand import adapted quickly to local conditions when arriving here and his WA tally is nine starts for five wins.”
Budding racecaller and form analyst Hayden King is a fan of Waimac Attack in the third race on the card.
“Waimac Attack has been racing incredibly well for some time and has been bursting to win a race,” King said. “With a slow beginner inside him, he looks set to simply lead and win on Friday.”
GPTV’s Ken Casellas believes Liberty Rose is overdue for a win.
“Liberty Rose has too much talent to sustain her losing sequence and she gets the nod as my best bet this week when she is the only runner off the back line in race five,” Casellas said. “This draw should give star reinsman Gary Hall Jr many options and the four-year-old mare should be able to outsprint her rivals in the closing stages of the 2130m event.”
Guild president Wayne Currall is keen on Herrick Roosevelt.
“This Gary Hall-trained five-year-old has a 50 per cent winning strike rate,” Currall said. “His two runs back from a spell have been full of merit and he is poised to break back into the winners’ stall on Friday night.”
VALUE BETS
Stuart: Rocknroll Baby has raced without luck at her recent starts. She should figure in the finish if she gets a good run in transit here.
Pat: Robert the Bruce’s last-start second indicates he could be due for a win and the 1730m distance should help. He could give punters some value.
Matt: Lot Twenty One should be able to lead and control affairs from the front over 1730m.
Tim: Mistersandman was super here last week from the same draw. Should be able to get a nice passage into the race again and can go one better.
Ryan: Sunrose Village likes racing on the pegs and will have the option of dropping to the fence from barrier three with just the nine runners across the front line. Could be running into the placings.
Ernie: The Arsonist has not won in his past eight starts, but gate one should give him a chance to show form which has enabled him to notch two Gloucester Park victories. He had difficulty getting a clear run when unplaced last Friday night.
Hayden: Robert The Bruce is poorly drawn over the short distance but his form is good. With some luck he will be in the finish.
Ken: The 11-year-old Courage Tells continues to impress with his determined finishing bursts. He can make his presence felt over the sprint trip in race two.
Wayne: The Reg Phillips-trained Illusionation will give them something to catch from the pole in race six. He could be hard to reel in over the 1730m trip.
