An initiative to celebrate Westbred talent is coming to Gloucester Park on 6 September 2024, uniting the Westbred Finals into one thrilling event.

Dubbed W Night, the event will feature an exceptional lineup of races exclusively for Westbred horses, encompassing a series of premier races, including:

  • Group 1 $225,000 Westbred Classic for 2YO Colts and Geldings
  • Group 1 $225,000 Westbred Classic for 2YO Fillies
  • Group 2 $100,000 Westbred Classic for 3YO Colts and Geldings
  • Group 2 $100,000 Westbred Classic for 3YO Fillies

The event will feature consolations for all events (subject to nominations) and an Open Races for colts and geldings and mares exclusively for Westbred horses. The evening will be further enhanced with owner activations, prizes and a dedicated room for owners with runners in the races.

Field selection for W Night will revert to heats which will be held in the fortnight preceding 6 September.

The inaugural 4-year-old features which had been previously advertised to be held on April 12 will remain on that date and will shift to W Night in 2025.

Racing WA Head of Harness Racing & Special Projects, Cameron Brown said W Night promises to be a highlight on the harness racing calendar.

“W Night is not just a race night, it’s a celebration of locally bred Westbred horses and the Westbred scheme’s success”, Cameron said.

‘’The added event of heats in 2024 adds another level of intrigue to W Night with all horses given their chance to battle it out to make the final’’

“During the 2023 racing season, more than $3.6 million was paid out in Westbred bonuses, demonstrating the scheme’s importance to the racing community.”

In 2023, Racing WA’s Westbred program distributed $1.3 million in Westbred first win bonuses to 219 winning Westbred two-year-olds and three-year-olds.

A further $306,000 were paid out in Westbred first win bonuses to 74 four-year-old or older horses.

Additionally, 100 owners received $500 in Westbred first start bonuses.
