The Angelique Club’s treasured role in the trots will be elevated with the staging of this year’s Allied Express Victoria Cup Lunch, which will include the $200,000 feature’s barrier draw.
The Tuesday lunch will embrace spring racing amid a busy times for Victoria’s racing codes, which club secretary Gay Donnelley said they were thrilled to be a part of.
“We haven’t done anything like this before, but we thought it was a great opportunity to include the broader harness racing community in our club,” Ms Donnelley said.
The Angelique Club was established 23 years ago as a social club and has attracted members from all areas of the trots as well as their friends.
“We all used to go to Moonee Valley on Saturday nights and sit in different parts of the complex and thought if we formed a ladies club it would bring us all together,” Ms Donnelley said.
“It started as a social gathering and moved the focus to supporting women in harness racing. We’ve long sponsored races, provided trophies and when the drought was on the Angelique Club provided feed to trainers. We’ve tried to support the industry in a lot of different ways.”
On Tuesday (October 10) those roles will extend to include ‘host’ for the club’s first Victoria Cup Lunch.
“It’s a big week in Melbourne with the Caulfield Guineas and The Everest in Sydney, and then the Victoria Cup on Saturday night,” Ms Donnelley said. “The Victoria Cup will be a focus of the luncheon and hopefully some of the connections come along for the lunch and the barrier draw. It’s a great race to be a part of.”
