8Vicbred horses will be racing for even more bonus money from September this year with Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) extending the Vicbred First Win Bonus to horses aged five years old and over.

From September 1 a $3500 First Win Bonus will be paid to any Vicbred eligible horse aged five or over who wins a C0 class race.

In another exciting Vicbred development, from this year to 2019 the Vicbred Super Series Finals prizemoney will be increased.

Pacing Final prizemoney will increase each year from this year ($115,000) to $130,000 by 2019, while trotting Final prizemoney will increase from $70,000 this year to $100,000 by 2019.

“HRV has had extensive discussions with Harness Breeders Victoria with regard to the five-year-old and older bonus. This move will ensure all owners who have been loyal to the Victorian breeding industry get the opportunity for maximum return on their investment,” HRV General Manager – Operations Vaughn Lynch said.

“Increasing the horse population is a key pillar of our strategic direction and part of that is maintaining the opportunities for horses currently in the racing pool.

“The increase in prizemoney for Vicbred Super Series Finals highlights the importance we place on this particular futurity series, which is designed to nurture the Victorian breeding industry.”

Trainer Larry Eastman, whose horses were able to win three Vicbred Super Series Finals last year, said the changes to Vicbred were “great for the industry”.

“Any increase in any Vicbred scheme is a big bonus to the industry,” Eastman said.

“Vicbred is the most important futurity series we have. The more you can put into Vicbred the better to look after our own backyard.”

Eastman’s stable is 100 per cent Vicbred.

“Every single horse on my farm is a Vicbred horse, either purchased from the sales or bred locally,” he said.

The Vicbred program is worth over $9 million each year.
