The ‘Freak Of The Creek’ Destreos has done it again.
The veteran 12yo pacer trained by Ken Rattray and driven by Kelli Dawson made it win number 82 from 379 starts with a hard fought half neck win in the 1660 metre Pace at Albion Park on Tuesday.
Equalling his career best mile time of 1.51.9 set last month at Albion Park, Destreos matched motors with noted local speedster Lebron (Gary Whittaker) out of the gate to the top of the straight.
He then withstood a late burst from the fast finisher My Jellignite (Haydon Barnes) to post another terrific win.
Destreos did all the hard yards racing outside Lebron as the duo slipped through the first half mile in 56.1 seconds. On the final bend Dawson called on her old mate Destreos for a supreme effort and the Astreos gelding leveled up alongside the race favourite and gave him the eye.
When the duo straightened for the final run to the judge Destreos ($4.00) was in front and dug deep to hold My Jellignite with Lucky Voodoo (Adam Sanderson) edging the $2.00 popular elect Lebron out of the official placings. The last half mile was covered in 56 seconds.
Destreos has won almost $670,000 and is an Albion Park phenomenon with 62 race victories on the Brisbane track, affectionately known as The Creek. He has also won a further 20 times on other tracks in Queensland and New Zealand.
In addition to his win tally Destreos has also finished in second or third placings a further 116 times.
