Steve Cairns, General Manager of UBET Radio TAB in Brisbane, passed away suddenly at his home in Brisbane this week, aged 53.
A passionate racing and sports fan, friend to many and a damn good bloke, Steve worked for more than 30 years in racing radio with a successful career on-air, in production and development and in management spanning three capital cities, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
Steve returned to the Brisbane based racing radio station, Radio TAB in May this year as General Manager, following Graham Kemp’s retirement. He had previously worked for 19 years with RSN in Victoria before making the move back home to Queensland and the station 4TAB, he was a first part of in the early 90’s
Highly skilled at identifying and coaching on-air talent, Steve had a very successful track record of creating innovative, high quality, relevant content catering to diverse audiences. In recent years he was the creator and developer of Victoria’s RSN programming for digital platforms-digital radio, web/app content and boutique digital channels for racing and spot, Carnival and Carnival 2.
On his return to the sunshine state his positive impact on the station was immediate.
“Steve brought with him a fantastic enthusiasm and in a very short time made a significant and enduring positive impact at Radio TAB,” UBET Chief Operating Officer Barrie Fletton said.
“I will miss his good humour, knowledge and capability, and I know he will be greatly missed by all of his colleagues and members of both the radio industry and racing industry.”
Please join us in expressing our deepest sympathies to Steve’s wife Nadia, his family, colleagues and friends.”
