5Rising trotting superstar Glenferrie Typhoon takes his place in the Avoca-Maryborough Community Bank Branches Trotters Cup at Maryborough on Gold Cup Day this Sunday.

A gifted trotter, Glenferrie Typhoon is taking all before him this season racing through his classes in breathtaking fashion.

Trainer Andy Gath knows what it takes to have a champion trotter having prepared the freakishly talented La Coocaracha and he resists comparing him to her just yet.

“She is the only champion I’ve trained, with due respect to Caribbean Blaster, who is a very good horse. He still has a long way to go but the signs are good.

“As you know the competition gets harder each time. He will soon be against Keystone Del, Maori Time, Stent will come over from New Zealand and Master Lavros might come over too but he will get his certainly get his opportunities.”

Armed with dazzling speed Gath admits that it is his biggest asset and which will hold him in good stead when taking on the big names but he is hoping he has the strength to match.

“He has got the speed to match them but whether he has the strength time will tell, sometimes you just need luck too.”

Sunday’s race wasn’t on the agenda initially but Gath is using it with an eye focused to later in the season.

“This race was a bit of an afterthought, we were going to the Scotch Notch the following week then the Bill Collins in November but I wanted to give him a crack at a stand start race because of the Australasian Trotting Championship in January and that’s a standing start.

“He is trotting really good, he has always had the ability and it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone to see him doing what he is doing.”

Even though Sunday’s race is a stand and Glenferrie Typhoon is an ODS horse Gath noted his terrific stand start record and believes the back line draw will help

“He has had 10 starts from a stand and run in the Top 3 8 times and even though he is ODS I am pretty confident he will go away. I think the back row is better as we can just follow them out.”
