The need for speed will commence at Redcliffe Paceway next week with Racing Queensland launching ‘Trot Rods’.

Staged over nine weeks, the brand-new initiative will be raced over 947 metres – one of the shortest harness racing distances across the globe – and will provide a $10,000 cash bonus for the quickest lap throughout the promotion.

Throughout March and April, Redcliffe will host weekly heats before culminating in a feature night on Sunday, May 10 which will be isolated to Trot Rods races and incorporated into SKY 2’s free-to-access coverage via Foxtel.

In total, eight heats will be staged on the feature night – swelling the series total to 16 – and will be limited to 20-minute gaps between races.

A raft of broadcast enhancements will also be unveiled including driver cam, new race angles and caller-to-driver audio, making Trot Rods a must-watch affair.

The night will also feature five leading drivers who will compete in each of the eight heats on the night.

“Trot Rods is about showcasing Queensland harness racing to a brand-new demographic,” RQ CEO Brendan Parnell said.

“It’s fast, it’s furious and it’s not something that racing fans are accustomed to seeing.

“The broadcast enhancements including driver cam means viewers will be closer to the action than ever before and we’re excited by the high-octane nature of Trot Rods from start to finish.”

The maximum field size throughout the promotion will be limited to five, with an emergency to be drawn.

Heat winners throughout Trot Rods will secure preference in field selection on the feature night.

TAB is also expected to support the initiative through Trot Rods exotics.
