With the new Breeding Season now officially commenced & with our juvenile Grand Finals, the Breeders Crown divisions having heralded the way, I decided to take time out from my Trotters State of the Nation Series to give breeders, owners & enthusiasts of both gaits the statistics they’ve never yet had: The Breeders Crown 2015 Premiership Tables*. I trust you all enjoy!

* Points allocation based on 5 for 1st, 3 for 2nd, 2 for 3rd & 1 for 4th.

Breeders Crown 2015 Pacing Sires Premiership

Somebeachsomewhere takes out the honours for Peppertree Farm. Although his frozen semen is also available from Empire Stud, all 3 of his winners, from just 4 starters, were served from Peppertree Farm who were accredited the official honour from HRV. Reigning champ, Bettors Delight, held on for 2nd just ahead of his lieutenant at Woodlands, American Ideal & old rival, Art Major. Some would say just as well for Bettors Delight given his $4,000 service fee price hike for the new season. Art Major, although coming away from the Big Day without a winner still earnt the distinction of fielding the greatest number of Finalists (11). In the 4yo Entires & Geldings Pacing Final his sons finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 7th. A big feat in anybody’s book.

Art Major’s solo feat was matched only by Woodlands Stud duo, American Ideal & Bettors Delight, who provided that stud with the other great feat of the day. They combined in the 3yo Fillies Final to finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 7th, American  Ideal taking the honours with the quinella.

In what could be the start of the changing of the guard anticipated by many breeders, Mach Three barely made the table with just one 4th from 6 Finalists.  The reins appearing to be now in the hands of his son, Somebeachsomewhere. However, let’s not write off the old guard just yet. New boom Pepper Tree stallion Rocknroll Heaven failed to make the board with his 4 Finalists in spite of his winning the 2yo Victorian Sires Premiership. Nor did Pepper Tree co-star, Sportswriter, who provided only one Finalist. Other notable absentee’s from the Premiership Table below with larger than average service fee price tags were Courage Under Fire & Western Terror. To be fair, Courage Under Fire had a solid year finishing in the top 10 on the Aged, 2yo & 3yo Victorian Sires Premierships. Western Terror for some reason has never enjoyed the same support in Australasia as he has received in North America.

Breeders Crown 2015 Trotting Sires Premiership

Muscles Yankee for Nevele R Stud stole the show in the Trotters Sires Premiership taking out the 2yo Fillies Final & 4yo Entires & Geldings Final with brother & sister pair, High Gait & Our Twentyten. Their USA bred dam, Regal Volo, also produced Alannah Hall (by Angus Hall) who finished midfield in the 3yo Fillies Final having had to contend with a difficult draw (gate 6). Regal Volo clearly wins the award for Breeders Crown 2015 Broodmare of the Year. Majestic Son & Skyvalley produced the greatest numbers of Finalists (8 each) just ahead of Angus Hall (7). However, none of them were able to find a winner on the day.

Breeders Crown 2015 Pacing Broodmare Sires Premiership

Dream Away may have caused somewhat of a surprise winning the Pacing Broodmare Premiership ahead of the two renowned broodmare sires, Safely Kept & In The Pocket. The latter not scoring a win but was close up in 4 Finals. In The Pocket was a clear winner on the number of Finalists tally (9). Dream Away’s points all came from his fillies, in keeping with his reputation as a sire of fillies. However, he also proved he’s not just a one act affair having sired 4yo Entires & Geldings Final winner, Hectorjayjay, to cap off a very big day for him. In the process he stood in the way of what would have otherwise been an Art Major clean sweep of that Final.

Breeders Crown 2015 Trotting Broodmare Sires Premiership

No surprises in the Trotting Broodmare Sires Premiership with Sundon taking it out.  However, a surprise did come with him doing it without having a winner. He was however, a runaway winner on the number of Finalists tally (11). Interestingly runners up on the Pacing Broodmare Sires Premiership, Safely Kept & In The Pocket also made the top 10 on the Trotting Broodmare Sires Premiership. Safely Kept (equal 5th) comes as no surprise given his standing as a great sire of both gaits. In The Pocket (equal 8th) arrived there courtesy of classy Great Success mare, Edge Hill, who ran a gallant 2nd behind champion Bacardi Lindy mare, Claudys Princess in the 4yo Mares Final.

Breeders Crown 2015 Pacing Studs Premiership

We hear much about the dominance of the big racing stables come Breeders Crown Finals Day but the table below also highlights the dominance of the major studs on the Day. The Big 5 scooped the pool on the Pacing Studs Premiership Table. Not one other stud made the board. Woodlands strolled away with the honours in spite of Somebeachsomewhere’s mighty 3 win effort for Pepper Tree. The telling blow for Woodlands came with their scooping of all the points on offer in the 3yo Fillies Final. Alabar failed to step onto the winner’s podium in spite of their runaway win in the number of Finalists tally (27), more than double that of their nearest rival Woodlands (13).

Breeders Crown 2015 Trotting Studs Premiership

Nevele R Stud came away with the Trotting Studs Premiership courtesy of champion stallion & sire of sires, Muscles Yankee. However, no such clean sweep for the big studs here with local Victorian trotting studs prominent on the table. Alabar again came away without a winner but again finished on top of the number of Finalists tally (11).

A big thank you to HRV & Melton Club officials & staff for their hospitality & turning on another great day of Harness Racing. I look forward to being back there again next year & hopefully with another Finalist. Congratulations to all who had one on our Big Day!

Check in on Trot Check next time where I’ll resume my State of The Nation Series.
