Classy European-bred mare My Tribeca is still a chance to compete in next month’s Dominion Handicap at Addington after an impressive win in Victoria on Saturday night.
Her trainer, Anton Golino, said she is trending in the right direction and he considers her a possibility to make the trip for the race on November 17.
“At this stage we’ve paid up and it will depend on her getting up in the rankings,” he said.
“It’s still a possibility and I’m not going to say we are definitely coming, but if she keeps doing everything right and comes out and does a bit more again on what she did on Saturday night, we will look at it.
“There’s a big difference between a TM1-TM3 trot and the Dominion, but I was really happy with her the other night; I think she’s getting back on track.”
My Tribeca was ranked 32 of the remaining 39 nominations after last week’s rankings, but Saturday night’s win helped her start her climb up the chart.
“She will be bumped up a few spots after that win,” said HRNZ Handicapper Andrew Morris, who helps decide the rankings in conjunction with Addington officials.
Monbet and Golden Gate have been withdrawn from above her in the last rankings and a few more are expected to pull out tomorrow, when the next round of payments are due.
This should see My Tribeca settle in the mid-20s with a month left to improve ten more spots.
My Tribeca has now won eight of her 21 career starts for Golino and her owner, renowned French breeder and horseman, Jean-Etienne Dubois.
Dubois is best known as both the breeder of current champion trotter Bold Eagle and as the breeder, trainer and driver of champion racehorse-cum-sire Coktail Jet.
He is the youngest son of Jean-Pierre Dubois, one France and the world’s most innovative breeders, who bred Love You among a host of top French stallions.
Jean-Etienne moved to Australia to train thoroughbreds in 2014 but still maintains breeding farms throughout the world and a full racing stable in France.
His relationship with Golino was born out of his father employing the Australian horseman.
“I worked for his father and through that I have become good friends with both of them,” said Golino.
“It’s a massive privilege and owner to train a horse for him; I am very lucky.”
My Tribeca is out of an Italian daughter of Coktail Jet and her father, the French sire Goetmals Wood, is regularly in the top five sires there.
Given there are over 520 registered sires, that is quite an impressive feat.
Golino also has Cyclone Jeter nominated for the Dominion, but she only returned to the trials last night and connections will not be outlaying tomorrow’s sustaining payment.
Kyvalley Blur, trained in Victoria by former Kiwi Brent Lilley, is currently ranked sixth for the Dominion, but has failed to impress in his recent racing.
