The table above highlights to me just what a magnificent achievement a couple of stallions and real standouts of our sport were able to accomplish.
Number 1:
Majestic Sun for having 3 offspring represented in the 9 horse final. He was the sire of just 11 of 53 yearlings go through the ring.
Majestic Son is the dominant trotting stallion in the Southern Hemisphere today, his short bio is below:
He has done it all and continues to sire top class horse.
- A Breeders Crown winning, World Champion son of the champion sire Angus Hall.
- Seven time leading trotting stallion in Australia
- Five time leading trotting stallion in New Zealand
- The sire of the richest Australian two year old trotter ever – Plymouth Chubb
- The sire of 75 stakes winners in the Southern Hemisphere
Number 2:
Sundon for being the broodmare sire with 3 offspring represented in the 9 horse final.
Sundon single-handedly advanced trotting breeding in the southern hemisphere by ‘quantum leaps’. His stock showed great speed but could also prove somewhat head strong. However, his record as a sire and now as a broodmare sire proves his stock have the ability to overcome any difficulties encountered. In 2014 Sundon was honoured for his overall record by induction into the NZ Trotting Hall of Fame.
Sundon currently leads the 3YO & All Age Broodmares Trotters Sires list by the length of the straight.
Number 3:
A Leading breeder that is well worthy of a mention is Central Coast harness racing devotee, owner and benefactor Michael Taylor (the man who was the driving force behind the race concept ) of Trotters Australia. Michael, a passionate advocate of the trotter, is the breeder of 3 finalists, a great effort that shouldn’t go unnoticed.
Michael is probably best known as the breeder-owner of Empire Bay, a winner of 25 races and $270,622 (to date) in stakes including the NSW Breeders Challenge 2YO Final and the NSW Foundation 3YO Final. He was also a three-time Breeders Crown Finalist. He was named NSW 3YO Trotter of the Year and still holds two national records set at Menangle over the 2300 metres & 3000 metres. Empire Bay also set the mile track record at Albion Park and another at Redcliffe in the Redcliffe Cup over the 2600 metres. Michael also sold Breeders Crown & Vicbred Super Series winner, Keayang Livana, at a past APTS sale.
When we spoke to Michael today he said:
“While I’ve bred, owned or have been the foal nominator of 17 Breeders Crown finalists, a record I’m pretty proud of, having 3 representatives in Saturday nights final is something I will never forget. I would also like to thank all those great buyers that have supported my yearlings over the journey, and wish them well on Saturday night and into the future”. Not only having bred 3 of the 9 APG $125,000 Gold Bullion Trotters Finalists, Michael also bred reigning NSW 2yo Pacing Filly of the Year Jewel Melody, winner of $349,000. Jewel Melody is a Finalist in the APG 3yo Gold Bullion Fillies Final and will be one of the favourites following a dominating win after sitting outside of the favourite Peaceful in their heat last Monday. All up an exceptional night for one of harness racing’s dedicated breeders.
So for anyone looking for a fantastic weekend event, come and support AUSTRALASIA’S NEWEST, RICHEST & POTENTIALLY FASTEST 2YO TROTTING RACE EVER SEEN.
