Outstanding three-year-old filly Double Expresso’s future is under a cloud. A cyst on a hind pastern is causing the problem and she will undergo surgery on Thursday when a screw will be inserted in a bid to mend the damaged pastern.

“She will then need three months off,” said trainer Ross Olivieri. “The prognosis is pretty good, and she has an excellent chance of recovery.

“She will be unable to contest coming events for three-year-old fillies and the major feature events for fillies and mares (the $50,000 Norms Daughter Classic on November 13 and the $125,000 Westral Mares Classic on November 27).

“I would say that Double Expresso was affected by this problem during her latest campaign; it might have taken the edge off her. All going well, it is possible she could be fit to resume racing in May. But we might even give her a bit of extra time and set her for the big races for mares at the end of next year.”

Double Expresso has been a shining light as a two and three-year-old and has a wonderful record of 22 starts for 12 wins, seven placings and $313,196 in prizemoney.

As a two-year-old she won two Group 1 features for fillies, the Sales Classic and the Westbred Classic, and as a three-year-old she won two Group 2 events, the Daintys Daughter Classic and Sales Classic, as well as the Group 3 Caduceus Club Classic when she beat Major Martini. She also finished a head second to Sports Package in the WA Oaks and a half-length second to Blockjorg in the Diamond Classic.
