5Melbourne has proven to be a fertile hunting ground for buyers in recent years, producing the likes of Caribbean Blaster, Sushi Sushi, Smolda, Follow The Stars, Fly Like An Eagle, Our Waikiki Beach and Menin Gate to name but a few.

Indeed, the top 300 horses to emerge from the APG Sales in Melbourne between 2009 and 2014 have collectively already earned in excess of $30million in prizemoney, at an average of more than $100,000 per horse.

Importantly, many of those horses are yet to even hit their peak, meaning that there is plenty more earnings to be added to that already impressive tally.

One of the great things about the APG Sales is that there are horses available for all budgets, and there are plenty of success stories across all of the price ranges.

While last season’s stars, Our Waikiki Beach and Menin Gate both sold for between $40,000 and $50,000, last week’s Victorian Derby placegetter, Dont Hold Back, was a $15,000 purchase at the 2014 Melbourne Sale, whilst recent SA Derby winner, Brallos Pass, was only a $7,000 purchase at the same sale.

The bottom line is that while nobody knows which of the 200 horses catalogued for Sunday’s Melbourne Sale will go on to be champions, there can be no doubt that there are future champions amongst them, and the challenge for buyers is to firstly identify, and then secure the horse or horses that could give them the harness racing ride of a lifetime.

APG’s Melbourne Sale takes place this Sunday, 7 February at Oaklands Rd, Oaklands Junction, commencing 11am.  For the latest photos, yearling videos and race videos, click here.
