A summer that promised so much is over for Lemond.
The national-recording setting trotter will miss the rest of the Christmas-New Year races, starting with the Flying Mile on his home track of Cambridge on Sunday.
“He was just starting to develop a few issues that weren’t serious but if we kept going with them could have become a lot worse,” says trainer Ross Paynter.
“Just minor bone things and we saw him gallop at Alexandra Park last Friday so he can go to the paddock now and have a break.”
Lemond will have a clean month off and then be brought back up for the Anzac Cup and Rowe Cup in April-May.
“It is a shame to miss these races but he is still only five and if we look after him he has a lot of racing ahead of him.”
With Lemond and his arch rival Temporale missing from Sunday’s Flying Mile and comeback king Speeding Spur drawn ideally at barrier two he is set to start long odds on in the next of the northern summer riches.
