The Muscle Hill horse Southwind Frank was one of the best young trotters in North America of his day.
He won 17 of his 26 lifetime starts including 10 consecutive races at two highlighted by the Breeders Crown, was 2YO Trotting Colt of the Year in both America and Canada, set a world record of 1:52.2 at three and earned a hefty $1,950,887.
Southwind Frank, who was first at the stud in America and is now based in Italy, has sired the winners of $US7.7million from only four crops of racing age including last year’s USA 3YO Filly Trotter of the Year Bond and the Hambletonian heat winner Delayed Hanover.
Southwind Frank’s only representative at the Australian sales this year is a bay colt being offered by former Queenslander Janice Bryant as Lot 81 at the Australian Pacing Gold sale at Magic Millions, Gold Coast on Sunday, January 28.
“He’s the only trotter at the Queensland sales,” Bryant said.
Janice, a horse chiropractor at Longwarry in Victoria’s Gippsland region, bought the colt’s dam Swede Dreams, a daughter of the Italian superstar Varenne, on behalf of a syndicate for about $35,000 at the Swedish yearling sales in 2010.
She began racing as a three-year-old in Victoria winning three times before being sent north to NSW where she managed a further success.
“Her best racing was done as a four and five-year-old with Shannon Price in Brisbane. It was Shannon’s first ever trotter and she had her for 16 starts for seven wins.” Bryant said.
At the stud Swede Dreams has only two foals of racing age including the triple Albion Park trotting winner Fenomenal.
The Southwind Frank colt boasts a truly international pedigree, combining the best bloodlines in North America, Sweden, Italy and France.
“He’s a January foal who just needs time. He’s a quick learner with everything he does and has a lovely nature,” Janice said.
The colt is eligible for the Breeders Crown, QBred, VicBred Platinum and Need For Speed.
Janice is also preparing an Always B Miki colt from the Rock N Roll Heaven mare Winehouse for Matthew and Kym Martin at the APG Melbourne sale on Sunday, February 4.
