The 28th Southland Harness Awards sponsored by Cullen Breeding will be held at the Ascot Park Hotel in Invercargill on Sunday night.
Nominees for the major awards are:
PERSON OF THE YEAR –
Clark Barron: in April became the 24th driver to gain 1000 wins in New Zealand.
Diane Cournane: breeder and co-owner of multiple group one winner Fight For Glory. (Diane is the subject of an item in upcoming Harnessed).
Nathan Williamson: in January drove his 500th New Zealand winner, leading Southland based trainer and driver for season.
HORSE OF THE YEAR –
Alley Way: five wins, third in Rowe Cup.
Franco Ledger: one New Zealand win, first in Bohemia Crystal and Shepparton Cup, second in Hunter Cup.
I’m Full of Excuses: four wins including Southern Supremacy Stakes.
Pulp Fiction: seven wins, third in Southern Supremacy Stakes.
Tas Man Bromac: six wins, second in Southern Supremacy Stakes.
BROODMARE OF THE YEAR –
Breath Of Life: dam of Fight For Glory.
Christian Dreamer: dam of Chase The Dream.
Janine Jaccka: dam of Jaccka Jack, Jaccka Justy, Jen Jaccka.
Tosca Hanover: dam of Arden Rooney, Maritime Arden
Winter Rose: dam of Rocknroll Arden, Arden’s Choice
Special awards will be made for
CONTRIBUTION TO HARNESS RACING –
Art Bloxham: long-time licence holder, horse float operator and sponsor.
Bruce Stewart: stalwart of Riverton club, current president, promoter of inaugural Diamond Day in April, editor of Southland Harness Website.
Ben Ward: horseman and starter for southern region.
