The annual Southland Harness Awards will be held at the Ascot Park Hotel on Sunday night and the feature presentations are for Horse of the Year, Broodmare of the Year and Achievement of the Year.

 

Nominations for Horse of the Year are:

DUKE OF WELLINGTON: winner of five from 10 including the Gr. 2 Southern Supremacy Stakes.

SMOKEY MAC: winner of six from fourteen, fourth in the Gr. 3 Southern Lights Trot and 10th in the Gr. 1 four-year-old Ruby.

SOMEJOY: winner of six from 10 including the South of the Waitaki pace on Show Day and a Southern Belle Speed Series heat on Wairio Mile Day in a record 1:53.2.

WAR MACHINE: winner of five from 15 and fourth in the Gr. 1 four-year-old Ruby.

 

Nominations for Broodmare of the Year are:

GALLEONS HONOUR: owned by Lester Smith, dam of Dazed And Confused, Venice Beach, Duke of Wellington and Rise Above This, all winners this season.

JOYFULBELLE: owned by Miracle Lodge Syndicate, dam of Bettor Joy, grand-dam of 2018 winners Rock N Joy, Somejoy, Giftofjoy, Majorpride (Gr. 1) and Firstjoy.

RIGHTEOUS FRANCO: owned by Charlton Park Enterprises, dam of Lightning Mach who ran 1:49 this term in the United States, and Pat’s Delight (Gr. 1).

 

Nominations for the Achievement Award are:

BRENT BARCLAY: drove three runners at Jewels including a second on Full Noise, won the Gr. 2 Supremacy on Duke Of Wellington, second on Southland drivers premiership.

KENNY BAYNES: President of Gore Harness Racing Club, owner of 14 individual winners of 21 races, share in three runners at the Jewels including Full Noise (second).

MURRAY BROWN: became second Southland trainer to prepare the winners of 500 races and pushed career stake earnings past $3,250,000.

BRETT GRAY: Southland’s leading trainer with 34 winners, 67 second and thirds and more than $325,000 stakes from 298 starters, trained New Zealand record holding trotters Full Noise and Jen Jaccka.

SHEREE TOMLINSON: leading Southland junior driver, third overall in Southland, third on National junior driver table, first female to win Gr. 1 Dominion Trot.
