Princess Tiffany suffers infection

Despite the best efforts of veterinarians, star juvenile filly Princess Tiffany is suffering an infection in her punctured hind hoof.

As a result, she has been scratched from racing at Alexandra Park on Friday and will not contest the Group 1 $150,000 Sires Stakes 2YO Fillies Championship.

Her co-trainer Mark Purdon confirmed the diagnosis this afternoon, which came five days after she stood on a carpenter’s nail in the preliminary of the Caduceus Club Classic, which she won.

The Auckland Trotting Club (ATC) released a statement on Monday declaring that the nail was believed to have found its way on to the course in a delivery on new ‘top’ for the race track.

Purdon questioned that claim and said he believes it to have come from the ongoing construction site at the top of the home straight.

Current construction efforts are primarily steel and concrete related, the ATC claimed.

Purdon and co-trainer Natalie Rasmussen are hopeful the infection can be staved off relatively quickly and that they can re-set their unbeaten star for the $150,000 Harness Jewels at Cambridge in just over five weeks’ time.

Her scratching has blown the market open for Friday night’s race with her three stablemates, Ruby Rose, Kayla Marie and Bubbled Up all sharing favouritism around the $4 mark.

Bordeaux scratched from Rowe Cup

A frustrating season has come to an inglorious end for showy chestnut trotter Bordeaux.

He has had to be scratched from Friday night’s $150,000 Rowe Cup and will be sent to the spelling paddock.

“He was tying up on Sunday and has a minor cut under a fetlock which is causing aggravation,” said his trainer and co-owner, Philip Iggo.

“We can’t get both fixed in time, in spite of trying, so he’s out for a spell.”

Bordeaux won three of nine starts this season, including the South Bay Cup at Kaikoura in early November, but a number of minor issues and setbacks have plagued him since.
