AS A father you always want to remind your sons, especially as they get older, “Dad’s still got it”.
Whether it’s the obligatory wrestling match, one-on-one game of basketball or trash talk…the old bull has to put the calf in its place!
Unfortunately for highly-respected horseman Lane Johnson that wasn’t the case at Globe Derby yesterday after his ‘yearling’ claimed bragging rights.
Returning from a steward’s enforced holiday, Corey Johnson was triumphant with in-form pacer Tidal Surge.
Corey was also successful behind the son of Mach Three before his time away from the sulky.
In between the two wins, Johnson partnered Tidal Surge to finish fourth.
“Yeah Corey was quick to point that out…he seems to think he’s got the edge over his old man, but a reality check is coming up,” Johnson joked.
“It’ll be a long time yet before the apprentice becomes the master.
“The young bull might have youthful energy, but the old bull has the experience.
“Though I think Corey believes his hair gives him a lethal combination of beauty and aerodynamics in the sulky!”
Beginning quickly to lead from barrier three, Tidal Surge was eased to take a trail behind Bien Hoa NZ.
Angled into the passing lane along the home straight, the gelding sprinted to a three-and-a-half metre win from the pacemaker.
Levi Jimmy was seven-and-a-half metres away third in 1:59.8 over 2230 metres.
“Dad can say what he wants about experience and so on, but we know the truth,” Corey said. “It’s the extra condition the old bull is carrying from being in a good paddock for too long!”
